The goal of the SKi8000 expedition 2004 is to make the first Dutch Ski descent from the summit of an eight thousand meter peak.
We will climb the Cho Oyu via the classic route, on the North face of Cho Oyu. We will fly to Kathmandu and by bus we will cross the Tibetan border to China, via the villages Nyalam and Tingri. Chinese basecamp is at 5200 meter but we will set up our base camp at 5800 meters. This is one of the highest base camps in the world.
We will set up 3 high altitude camps on our way to the summit. Camp 1 is situated on the ridge of the mountain at 6400m. Camp 2 is at 7000m and camp 3 is at 7500m. We will spend several weeks setting up these camps and acclimatizing. Once ready, we will make our final climb to camp 3, spend a night, and climb up to the summit.
About one hundred altitude meters above camp 3, a 15m high rock band has to be crossed before attaining the large summit plateau at 8201 m. Once Everest can be seen, the summit has been reached! From here we will ski back down in the thin air as low as we can, depending on the snow conditions. This could be down to camp 1 or maybe even lower.
