Yesterday Joost, Greg and Herman left base camp for OC&C camp 1. After a six hour walk, Greg was a little faster, we all were very happy to have lunch at OC&C camp 1. The rest of the afternoon we drank a lot of water and Isostar, we melted snow and ice and we had some hartkeks to eat. We also spent some time in our tent resting. Meanwhile the Sherpa's were doing a great job. They were fixing the ropes up to Fugro camp 2. Due to a heavy storm in the morning they started a bit later then they expected. Therefor they reached 2/3 of the way to Fugro camp 2. Ang Pemba was great fixing the rope at the most technical part: very steep blank ice at the bottom of the ice cliff. After making diner in the tent we all had a good night rest.
Today Joost, Greg and the Sherpa's started at 08.30hr climbing to Fugro Camp 2. Only at 16.00hr they all arrived at Fugro camp 2 (7080 m). It was a very hard day and they all were very glad to arrive there. For Joost, Greg and Ang Pemba this was a new altitude record. They all hope to better this record tomorrow and the next coming week! Tonight Joost, Greg and Ang Pemba sleep at Fugro camp 2. Tomorrow they will climb to Vicks camp 3 and then descent to OC&C camp 1 or base camp. Pemba and Pasang prefer to sleep at OC&C camp 1. Tomorrow they will put Vicks camp 3 in place and fix some more ropes. Herman:'After reaching OC&C camp 1 yesterday I was very happy. Not only was it a new altitude record for me (6425 m). It was also one of my goals during this expedition to sleep there one night. Getting to OC&C camp 1, climbing the screeslope, it was the most heavy climb I've ever done. I was completely exhausted getting there. Some drinks and mackrel did me very good. I didn't have any complaints, so good acclamatized. During the night I slept in a tent with one layer. At midnight I measured minus 19 degrees C. Brrr. Luckily Demmenie Sport provided us with very warm sleeping bags so I actualy slept quite well. This morning I said goodbye to the rest of the team as they were leaving for Fugro camp 2. After a three hour descent I was back in base camp. From there I can clearly oversee the mountain with my binoculars. I am able to see almost every step they make. I was very happy to see everybody reaching Fugro camp 2. Today I had several radio calls with Joost, Greg and the Sherpa's on the mountain some qoute's: Joost: 'het huilen stond mij nader dan het lachen zo focking zwaar was het, een mijlpaal waar kei en kei hard aan gewerkt is door iedereen', 'we hebben het totaal niet cadeau gekregen maar we zijn er gewoon en daar zijn we onwijs blij mee, Greg en ik en de Sherpa's'. Greg: 'gaat goed, (kuch kuch) echt een hele zware dag geweest, kan me niet herinneren dat ik zo moe ben geweest', 'tenten opzetten, proberen wat te eten en te drinken en warm te krijgen want het was ook een enorm koude dag, veel wind'. Pemba and Pasang: 'we are good in OC&C camp 1, we are making thee and food. No problems. Tomorrow we come up again'. When Joost and Greg are back in base camp you'll get more personal updates! |
